The biggest benefit to me I feel is that I am much more emotionally stable. I don’t get stressed like I used to and I am able to let go of situations that irritate me without getting into a full blown story about them. I don’t get hooked into the internal chatter for so long and spend hours, days or weeks ruminating about things because I am much more mindful and aware of my thoughts.
I can also bring my body back to balance and calm much quicker using my breath and awareness. I now respond, not react to situations much more since developing a daily meditation practice. There is less arousal of my nervous system, so less stress on a daily basis, I have learned to regulate my own nervous system.
I used to criticize myself badly, as a lot of us do, but over the years I have learned self acceptance, being more patient and kind to myself is very healing. I value myself more and I have also learned to stay with uncomfortable feelings and emotions until they pass instead of trying to suppress them. This helps them soften and fade. My self- esteem and confidence has grown a lot. I find the discipline of sitting in practice every day very supportive, it makes me feel strong and good about myself. Meditation helps me stay present in the now. This really helps reduce anxiety and worry about future events
